Carbon Manganese Steel Manufacturer in India

Carbon Manganese Steel for Engineering & Structural Applications

At Ludhiana Steel Rolling Mills, we manufacture a range of carbon manganese steel grades for engineering, forging, machining and structural applications.

Carbon combines with a higher manganese content to support strength, toughness and practical manufacturing performance. Depending on the grade, these steels can be used for forged components, machined parts, structural engineering and other load-bearing applications.

Our current carbon manganese steel range includes 20Mn2, 27Mn2, EN14, EN15, 37C15, 28Mn6, SAE1541, SAE1524, ST52-3, ST50-2, S355-J2 and ASTM-A105.

Carbon Manganese Steel Grades We Manufacture

These grades serve different purposes, so the correct choice should be based on the applicable standard, component, section size, manufacturing route and required mechanical properties.

Carbon Manganese Steel Product Forms

Carbon Manganese Steel Round Bars

Available size range: 16mm to 230mm.

Round bars are suitable for forging, machining and general engineering applications where a circular starting section is preferred. Typical requirements may include shafts, pins, forged parts, machine components and structural engineering parts.

Carbon Manganese Steel RCS Bars

Available size range: 28mm to 140mm.

RCS bars can be considered where the forging route benefits from a round-cornered square starting section.

Carbon Manganese Steel Peeled Bars

Available size range: 18mm to 80mm.

Peeled bars provide an improved starting surface for machining and precision-component manufacturing.

Understanding Carbon Manganese Steel

Manganese plays an important role in engineering steel. Compared with simpler carbon steels, increased manganese can contribute to:

  • Improved strength
  • Better hardenability
  • Useful toughness
  • Improved response to heat treatment
  • Practical performance in forged and structural components

The actual behaviour varies considerably from one grade to another. A grade such as SAE1541 is not intended to serve the same role as S355-J2, while ASTM-A105 has its own forging-specific specification requirements.

For this reason, carbon manganese steel should be selected by grade and application, not simply by category name.

Engineering Manganese Grades

Grades such as 20Mn2, 27Mn2 and 28Mn6 are manganese-bearing engineering steels used where greater strength and hardenability may be needed than in basic low-carbon steel. These types of steels may be considered for:

  • Forged components
  • Shafts
  • Pins
  • Machine parts
  • Load-bearing engineering components

The final application should always follow the governing material and component specification.

EN14 & EN15

EN14 and EN15 are established engineering steel designations used in mechanical and component-manufacturing applications. They belong within the broader carbon-manganese engineering category but should be treated as separate material specifications.

When ordering either grade, the enquiry should identify:

  • Exact grade
  • Applicable standard
  • Section size
  • Supply condition
  • Intended component

This avoids treating related engineering steels as interchangeable when their specification requirements differ.

SAE1541 & SAE1524

SAE1541 and SAE1524 are manganese-bearing SAE engineering grades. Their alloy balance makes them relevant where the final component requires a combination of strength, manufacturability and response to subsequent processing.

Typical component requirements may include forged parts, shafts and pins, automotive engineering parts and machined mechanical components.

Where heat treatment is part of the manufacturing route, the required condition should be included with the material enquiry.

Structural Carbon Manganese Grades

The category also includes ST52-3, ST50-2 and S355-J2. These grades belong to structural-engineering families and should not be treated in the same way as ordinary shaft or machine-part steels.

S355-J2

S355-J2 is commonly specified where structural strength and impact toughness requirements need to be controlled under the applicable standard.

ST52-3

ST52-3 is an older structural designation that continues to appear on engineering drawings and legacy specifications. Where ST52-3 appears on an older drawing, we recommend sharing the original material specification rather than automatically converting it to a newer designation.

ST50-2

ST50-2 is another structural steel designation that should be evaluated against the exact standard stated on the customer drawing. For these structural grades, section size, delivery condition and mechanical-property requirements are especially important.

ASTM A105 for Forged Components

ASTM A105 is an important grade within this category because it is widely associated with carbon steel forgings used in pressure-related service. It should be treated as a specification-controlled forging grade, not simply as a generic carbon-manganese steel.

For an ASTM A105 enquiry, key information should include:

  • Component type
  • Material specification
  • Required section or starting size
  • Quantity
  • Heat-treatment condition where specified
  • Testing or inspection requirements
  • Customer drawing

This helps keep the material requirement aligned with the actual forging application.

Carbon Manganese Steel for Forging

Carbon manganese steels are well suited to a variety of forging applications because selected grades can provide a useful combination of strength and processability.

For forging requirements, we recommend specifying: Grade + Standard + Product Form + Size + Quantity + Supply Condition + Final Component.

The starting form can be either Round Bar, where circular stock suits the forging sequence, or RCS Bar, where round-cornered square stock better supports billet utilisation or die filling.

The choice should come from the forging design rather than from the steel grade alone.

Carbon Manganese Steel for Machining

Depending on the grade and supply condition, carbon manganese steels may also be machined into finished engineering components. Typical operations include:

  • Turning
  • Milling
  • Drilling
  • Boring
  • Threading
  • Gear cutting

For precision machining, the starting surface and straightness can become important. Where applicable, a peeled bar can provide a more prepared starting condition than a standard rolled surface.

Heat Treatment & Supply Conditions

The heat-treatment response of carbon manganese steels varies by grade. Our heat-treatment infrastructure supports annealing, normalising and spheroidising.

The required condition should be specified according to the relevant grade standard and customer requirement.

Structural grades, forging grades and engineering manganese steels may all require different processing routes, so we do not recommend applying one generic heat-treatment condition across the category.

From Steelmaking to Finished Bar

Our carbon manganese steels are supported by an integrated manufacturing route: Steel Melting → Ladle Refining → Vacuum Degassing → Continuous Casting → Rolling → Heat Treatment / Finishing → Inspection & Testing.

This allows us to manage the material through multiple stages before it reaches your forging press or machine shop.

For buyers working with specification-controlled materials, this integrated route helps keep chemistry, processing and inspection connected within the manufacturing system.

Inspection & Testing

Different carbon manganese grades may call for different verification requirements. Our testing infrastructure includes facilities for:

  • Spectrometric analysis
  • Tensile testing
  • Impact testing
  • Hardness testing
  • Ultrasonic flaw detection
  • Jominy testing
  • Metallurgical examination
  • Gas analysis
  • Magnetic particle inspection

The inspection plan should always follow the applicable material standard, product specification and customer requirement. For grades such as S355-J2 or ASTM-A105, specific testing requirements may form an important part of the purchase specification.

Applications & Industries

Forging

Grades within this category can be used as starting material for forged engineering components, depending on the specification.

Automotive & Engineering Components

Manganese-bearing engineering grades can be relevant to shafts, pins, forged parts and other mechanically loaded components.

Structural Engineering

ST52-3, ST50-2 and S355-J2 belong to structural steel families used where defined structural performance is required.
